I'm Studying Cantonese!

This is a post I never thought I would write...

I can speak/read/type (I have awful handwriting) Mandarin to an intermediate level.

Since moving back to Hong Kong 2 1/2 years ago, my mandarin abilities have rapidly decreased, but they are in there, and get dusted off a few times a week.

Having found myself with some unexpected free time, I decided to take a month of intensive Cantonese classes in November 2013 - 4 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 4 weeks.

Why?  Well, I live in Hong Kong, and my kids go to local Cantonese school.  It will be good for them to see me studying Cantonese, and it will help me to communicate with the other parents and teachers at the school.

I don't have any expectations that my Cantonese will ever catch up with my Mandarin level.  On the other hand, I perfectly expect to lose one Mandarin word for every Cantonese word I learn!!

I think you will do great. You are highly motivated, which goes a long way in language learning.

You go! I think it is great for our kids to see us learning new things. I do think language learning definitely gets harder with age (I am learning piano now which is it's own language... and I now have immense empathy for kids with reading disabilities after stumbling through reading bass clef music for my left hand). But keeping your brain active with things like learning new languages is one of the best ways to stay mentally "fit" and young!

Thanks Kim! The piano, that is waaaay harder than a language - it takes coordination and talent!
I agree with you, it is very important for our kids to see us studying - be it for professional qualifications or out of interest.
Sometimes I am not sure if studying Chinese benefits my brain or if all the ativity causes it to hurt... haha
